Background of the Study
Technical education is widely recognized as a cornerstone of industrial development, providing the human capital necessary for innovation, productivity, and economic growth. In Kwaya Kusar Local Government Area, Borno State, technical education plays a critical role in shaping the local industrial landscape by equipping students with specialized skills that are directly applicable to the manufacturing and service sectors. This educational stream focuses on imparting practical knowledge and hands-on training, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to contribute to industrial activities. Recent developments in the region have underscored the importance of aligning technical education with the needs of modern industries, thereby fostering a skilled workforce that can drive sustainable industrial growth (Abdullahi, 2023). Educational policymakers have increasingly advocated for reforms that integrate advanced technical training, modern equipment, and industry-relevant curricula to bridge the gap between academia and industrial demands (Mustapha, 2024). In Kwaya Kusar, technical institutions have established collaborations with local industries to offer apprenticeships and real-world project experiences. These partnerships are designed to enhance the practical training of students, thereby promoting a culture of innovation and technical excellence. However, despite these positive trends, challenges remain. Inadequate funding, obsolete laboratory facilities, and a shortage of qualified instructors have hampered the full realization of technical education’s potential. Additionally, there exists a gap between the rapid technological advancements in industries and the pace at which technical curricula are updated, leading to a mismatch between industry needs and the skills of graduates (Suleiman, 2025). This study, therefore, seeks to evaluate the role of technical education in driving industrial growth in Kwaya Kusar. By analyzing the interplay between educational inputs, industry requirements, and economic outcomes, the research aims to identify critical success factors and areas needing improvement. The findings will not only contribute to academic discourse but also offer practical insights for policymakers and industry stakeholders aiming to harness technical education as a lever for industrial and economic development. Emphasis will be placed on understanding how curriculum reforms, infrastructural investments, and enhanced teacher training can collectively improve the quality of technical education and, in turn, stimulate industrial growth (Ibrahim, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the acknowledged importance of technical education in spurring industrial growth in Kwaya Kusar, several critical challenges impede its effective contribution to the local economy. Foremost among these challenges is the persistent inadequacy of funding, which has resulted in outdated equipment and insufficient laboratory facilities essential for high-quality technical training (Yusuf, 2023). Additionally, a shortage of adequately trained technical instructors further exacerbates the problem, leading to a curriculum that often lags behind current industrial practices and technological advancements. This disconnect between technical training and industry requirements has resulted in a workforce that is not fully prepared to meet the modern demands of industrial sectors. Moreover, the lack of regular curriculum review processes means that the programs offered may not reflect the latest trends and innovations in technology, thus diminishing the relevance of the education provided (Ahmed, 2024). The situation is compounded by limited opportunities for student internships and apprenticeships, which are crucial for bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Without these experiential learning opportunities, students struggle to translate classroom instruction into job-ready skills. The cumulative effect of these issues is a diminished capacity of technical education to serve as a catalyst for industrial growth in the region. The current study aims to investigate these challenges in depth, examining the structural and operational barriers that hinder the effective linkage between technical education and industrial development. By identifying and analyzing these impediments, the research intends to offer actionable recommendations for policymakers and educational administrators to enhance the quality and relevance of technical education in Kwaya Kusar (Abdullahi, 2023). Addressing these issues is critical to ensuring that technical education can fulfill its potential as a driver of industrial growth and economic prosperity in the area.
